[ARCHIVED] M.D. Trail Project Moving Along

October 1, 2014 – Despite a delay in equipment delivery, work on the Municipal District of Bonnyville’s newest trail system will begin after the Thanksgiving long weekend.
Earlier this year, Council approved the purchase of $600,000 in trail building equipment. The creation of trails will allow residents in the M.D. and neighbouring communities to enjoy the outdoors. This latest trail will allow everyone to bike, walk or roll from Jessie Lake to Moose Lake.
“We will be working on roughing in the trail with contracted equipment,” said Darcy Zelisko, Director of Transportation and Utilities. “We will be working on the ‘West Leg’. We’ll be doing the rough in along the north ditch of Township Road 611 using existing Municipal Reserves (MRs) and Road Right of Ways.”
The first phase of the trail system will run from Highway 28 to Range Road 465. Zelisko is currently working with Alberta Transportation to get approval to use an old cattle crossing under Highway 28 by the Shaw House. This would allow users to cross the trail without having to go on the highway. Phase II, in cooperation with the Town of Bonnyville, will connect the new trail with the Town’s existing trail at Jessie Lake. Zelisko said there are plans to eventually pave the trail.
“We recognize recreation is a key part of the lifestyle for residents not only in the M.D., but our neighbouring communities as well,” said Reeve Ed Rondeau. “These trail systems will give those residents another option for having an active, healthy lifestyle while enjoying our beautiful surroundings at the same time. We are happy to have this opportunity to partner with the Town of Bonnyville to create this link between our communities.”
Municipal District of Bonnyville Council’s priority is to deliver services to M.D. residents. As a member of our integrated communities, the M.D. collaborates and partners with community organizations and neighbouring municipalities to enhance services for all residents throughout the region.
