COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS October 10, 2023

#1 Planning and Development Decisions – Council approved a discretionary use development application for a natural resources extraction and processing facility use for a Class II sand and gravel pit as presented with the additional condition of hours of operation being Monday to Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and Saturday, 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Council also approved a Development Permit application for discretionary use for a front yard variance to allow for an existing mobile home addition to a single-family dwelling.

#2 Planning and Community Services Updates – Council proclaimed October 15-21, 2023, as Small Business Week in the Municipal District of Bonnyville.

Council directed Administration to bring back a request for $250,000 towards the 2026 Alberta Winter Games made by the Chair of the Joint Municipal Regional Sports Tourism Committee to the 2024 municipal budget deliberations for Council’s consideration.

#3 Delegations

Council heard two delegations. The first from Stepping Stones Crisis Society and has accepted the presentation on their new building project as information and furthermore directed Administration to bring their request for funding support to a future meeting of Council for consideration. The second delegation was a resident presenting concerns regarding rural crime in the M.D. of Bonnyville, Council accepted the presentation as information and directed Administration to schedule a meeting with the Minister of Justice to discuss concerns with rural crime and invite some members of the community to attend and participate. Furthermore, Administration was directed to send letters to Members of Parliament, Laila Goodridge, in the Fort-McMurray-Cold Lake constituency and Shannon Stubs, in the Lakeland constituency regarding the concerns.

#4 Briefly – Council defeated a motion to discontinue the recording of Regular Meetings of Council as recommended by the Committee of the Whole.

Council gave Second and Third Reading for Bylaw No. LU 576, amending the Land Use Bylaw.

Council gave Second and Third Reading for Bylaw No. 1855, amending the La Corey Area Structure Plan Bylaw. 

Council adopted amending Policy No. C-1.007 Cemeteries Policy. 

Council adopted amending Policy No. C-3A.005 Specialized Fencing Policy.

Council rescinded Policy No. 3A.010 Retention of Land Files Policy, as it was determined that the required retention of land files information is incorporated in Bylaw No. 1658.

#5 Council Invitations – Council member attendance was approved for the Cold Lake Snowmobile Club Sleds and Threads Fundraiser and the Ronald McDonald House Charities the Taste of Home Gala.
